Most children come to the College from one of ten local primary schools. There are close links through the Academic Councils, between all ten schools and increasingly, teachers are working together to ensure genuine continuity of learning throughout the years of compulsory education. Equally, good links exist with the main further education providers and the majority of our students go on to courses in one of these establishments.

Students in an Art Lesson Recognition of the importance of the whole area caused governors in 1992 to change the title from Chulmleigh Community College to The Community College, Chulmleigh. This title, quite correctly, suggests that we are much more than an 11-16 secondary school. We provide a wide variety of adult education courses and trained support for activities, groups and individual., within our catchment area through our Community Education Programme.

Facilities for Learning

A Computer in the IT Room

The Community College is on a large and open campus with spectacular views over the Devon countryside. Our specialist teaching areas are well equipped. There are several recently upgraded Science Laboratories, now with 21st Century Technology, a new computer room for lessons, Art and Pottery Rooms, a range of Technology Workshops, a Music Suite with practice rooms, a large and well stocked Library and a high-tech Learning Resource and Information Centre. Most spaces, except the technical and science areas, are carpeted.

The College's GymnasiumSporting facilities include a heated swimming pool, tennis courts, conveniently situated playing fields and large and well-equipped gymnasium.

Drama is taught in the Hall, which is also used for regular assemblies and a range of drama productions. At lunch times, the Hall functions as a dining room.

The College is generously supplied with Information Technology equipment. Students have access to suites of Apple computers and PCs, all with Internet facilities, and all networked in various learning centres in the College.

A Learning Community

The Community College, Chulmleigh is committed to promoting learning. This is the purpose that unifies all our work at the College. We are interested in learning in the very widest sense of the word. Our view of learning includes all those aspects of personal development that lead to maturity - intellectual curiosity, social skilfulness, sporting excellence and aesthetic awareness. Learning can be demanding. It is sometimes fun, often routine, always exhilarating, sometimes exasperating and occasionally inspirational. Whatever its guise or difficulty, we aim to help our students enjoy learning and to learn how to learn.
Above all we value, recognise and celebrate the efforts and achievements of all of our students Regardless of their natural abilities.

The Library

The College has an excellent library, which is shared with the community and jointly funded by the Education and Library Departments of Devon County Council.

Students use the library for research purposes during lessons and may visit it to read or work on projects at break and lunchtime. All students become members of the library when they join the College and are encouraged to borrow books and read widely. We have a wide range of fiction and non-fiction material. Library staff are always available to help and advise.
